ONGOING PROJECT

Alter-Natives

Alter-Natives grew out of my travels, which began in 2013. Through volunteering, shared homes and encounters with communities exploring different ways of living, I found stories I wanted to bring beyond the places where they began. Photography led naturally to film; directing, filming and editing for Wudang Tian Ma, particularly in the Sahara, gave me the confidence to take that idea further.

The original vision was a series of 15–20 minute documentaries about communities, permaculture projects, squats and the people behind them. I wanted to make their experiences more accessible: how they grew food, cared for the land and organised life together. Often, the people trying something different had little time or means to share what they were learning. Alter-Natives was imagined as a bridge.

That series has yet to take shape. Instead, the project became a space for friends, artists and musicians to share their creations. For a time, I turned my home into a recording studio, giving rise to a collection of live music sessions. These performances now sit alongside artist portraits and documentary explorations, with the same curiosity at their heart: taking time to listen, and giving a story room to reach someone new.
